What is a Nonogram?
A nonogram is a logic puzzle where you fill in cells on a grid based on number clues. Each row and column has a set of numbers that tell you the lengths of consecutive filled cells in that line. For example, a clue of "3 1" means there's a group of 3 filled cells, then at least one empty cell, then 1 filled cell.
The challenge is figuring out which cells are filled and which are empty using only these clues. A well-constructed nonogram has exactly one valid solution and often reveals a picture when completed.
How Our Solver Works
Our engine uses a multi-stage approach. First, it applies fast line-solving algorithms that determine which cells must be filled or empty based on the leftmost and rightmost possible positions of each clue block. For harder puzzles, it uses brute-force gap distribution and trial and error with backtracking.
History of Nonograms
Nonograms were invented independently by Non Ishida and Tetsuya Nishio in 1987. The name "nonogram" comes from Non Ishida. Nintendo popularized them as "Picross" starting in 1995. Today they're enjoyed by millions of puzzle fans worldwide.
Tips for Solving
Start with the largest clue numbers — they constrain the most cells. Look for rows or columns where the clue numbers add up to nearly the full width. Use the process of elimination: if a cell can't be filled without creating a contradiction, it must be empty.
